Inside every Newfoundland Boxer, Elkhound and Great Dance is a puppy longing to climb on to your lap.
And two new hunting breeds are added to the list of dog breeds in American Kennel Club longing to climb on to your lap. The great Nederlandse kooikerhondje and the grand basset griffon Vendeen breeds are introduced yesterday to American Kennel Club.
Since 2016, they are the first breeds added to the roster of American Kennel Club.
The French Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen, goes by "GBGV" for short, is a rabbit hunter with a happy and social personality. He is sometimes stubborn out of home and is persistent. This breed of dogs is fairly energetic and does not get nervous and tired easily. GBGVs are known for their speed, stamina and cheerful nature.
GBGV is one of a number of long, low-to-the-ground basset breeds with height of 16-18 inches and weight of 40-45 pounds. Their life expectancy is 13-15 years. With fluffy skin of white, with any combination of lemon, orange, sable, grizzle or black markings, GBGVs are pack dogs and are good companions.
The brown and white Nederlandse kooikerhondje goes back hundreds of years in Holland. this dog breed is benevolent, intelligent, responsive, alert, active and defensive. The history of calling these dogs Kooikerhondje belongs to sixteenth century. In duck hunting the hunters used these dogs to lure and drive ducks to cages, where the Kooiker (the hunter) could easily catch the fowl. So, the dogs were called the Kooiker's hondjes (Kooiker's dogs).
An adult kooikerhondje weights from 19 – 24 pounds with height of 14-16 inches. They live on average from 12 – 14 years. Kooikerhondjes are now about 7,000 worldwide and roughly 500 in the U.S.
Both of the dogs are eligible for many dog shows this year but can't compete at the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club show until next year.
