How to Prevent Suicide

It is sad that some people aren’t waiting for their happy ending. They are just waiting for the end and try to END it. This is the reason, every year we see rise in numbers of deaths because of Suicide. According to World Health Organization (WHO), each year approximately one million people die from suicide, which represents a global mortality rate of 16 people per 100,000 or one death every 40 seconds. It is predicted that by 2020 the rate of death will increase to one every 20 seconds.

A suicidal person may not ask for help, but that doesn't mean that help isn't wanted. People who take their lives don't want to die—they just want to stop hurting. Suicide prevention starts with recognizing the warning signs and taking them seriously. If you think a friend or family member is considering suicide, you might be afraid to bring up the subject. But talking openly about suicidal thoughts and feelings can save a life.

Suicide was the second leading cause of death among 15–29-year-olds globally in 2015. Have you ever thought, what drives so many individuals to take their own lives?

There may be a number of reasons why people commit suicide among which Depression is the most profuse. It is a serious public health problem; however, suicides are preventable with timely, evidence-based and often low-cost interventions.

Here are some ways to prevent if you find anyone considering suicide. But before talking about the prevention methods, let’s find the warning signs of suicide.

There may be a number of warning signs that someone could be planning to take their own life but some common red flags are:

  1. Talking about suicide or making preparations 
  2. No hope for the future 
  3. Perceive burdensome 
  4. Self-loathing, self-hatred 
  5. Losing interest in things they previously enjoyed 
  6. Isolating themselves 
  7. Self-destructive behavior 
  8. difficulty in concentrating or sleeping 
  9. Feeling trapped 
  10. Sudden sense of calm 
We need to be proactive in offering assistance to individuals who we think might be considering suicide. Here are some ways to prevent suicide.

1. Talk to a person about suicide

Talking to a friend or family member about their suicidal thoughts and feelings can be extremely difficult for anyone. But if you're unsure whether someone is suicidal, the best way to find out is to ask. You can't make a person suicidal by showing that you care. In fact, giving a suicidal person the opportunity to express his or her feelings can provide relief from loneliness and pent-up negative feelings, and may prevent a suicide attempt.

2. Listen to them


Allow them to express their feelings. Let them do most of the talking. They will often feel a great sense of relief someone wants to talk to them about their darkest thoughts. In fact, giving a suicidal person the opportunity to express his or her feelings can provide relief from loneliness and pent-up negative feelings, and may prevent a suicide attempt.

3. Check their safety

If you are really worried don’t leave them alone. Remove any means of suicide including weapons, medications, drugs, alcohol, even access to a car.

4. Give them some suggestions

Spend some time with Nature

The main reason of suicide is depression. It can be lessened by suggesting the person, who is thinking about suicide, to keep him/herself busy with friends and family and especially with the nature. No medicine works more than getting acquaintance with Nature in depression.

Nature helps to find an answer why we are here? What is the purpose of coming in this world?
Likewise suggest the person to involve in some social welfare.

4. Never leave the suicidal person alone

Do not, under any circumstances, leave a suicidal person alone. There should be always someone who can be with such a person until he/she seems better in conduct.
Make them realize that they are never alone.

5. Be keen on the suicidal person

LOVE is the only medicine which works every time. Take care of such person, never argue and handle his/her opinions and feelings gently. Give them extra time.

6. Realize them their worth and the Blessings they have

Everyone of has a direct or indirect impact on family, society and its benefit. Make them realize their worth to their family, friends and to the society. Realizing them and appreciating their worth strengthens their bond with family and friends. Talk with them about the blessings they have. No matter what problems someone faces, how unfortunate someone feels at times, there are always countless blessings with him. Involve him/her in counting those blessings.

Have sitting with suicidal person for such awareness.

Every life has a purpose. Every story is important. Everyone’s dreams are precious. Everyone’s voice matters. EVERYONE is born to make an impact.

So understand your worth, value your life, and appreciate your blessings.
