Winters Bring Heaters but What are Safety Tips


With the arrival of winter, everyone rushes to find warmth and comfort. Some people like to envelop themselves in a warm blanket, while other like to sip hot chocolate. However, there are some people who prefer to sit in front a heater. Even though it sounds wonderful, it might not be the best choice for your health and can be unsafe.

Burning of oxygen leads to potential oxygen levels drop and leads to suffocation. You need to open the door little for this. Apart from that these heaters reduce the humidity leading to dry eyes, nasal blockage.

 Here are some quick heater safety tips to follow:

  1. Follow the instructions to the letter on how to use heating devices
  2. Have a one meter pet and kid free zone around all heating devices. Children and pets are at high risk for burns from many heating devices
  3. Always keep the heater in a reasonable temperature so you don’t overheat the room.
  4. Make sure fireplaces have screens to prevent sparks setting the house on fire.
  5. When burning any heater, make sure there is good ventilation in the room. Ensure that you open the doors and windows of your room to initiate natural ventilation.
  6. Never leave any type of heater unattended.
  7. Keep a bowl of water placed in the corner of your room while using the heater. This will work like a vaporizer and keep the moisture levels in the air in check.
  8. Newer put anything on top of a heater – even when it is switched off.
  9. Make sure there is nothing that can catch fire within a meter of the heating device.
  10. Check electrical wiring on heaters and don’t use extension cords, multi-plugs or any device with threadbare wiring.
  11. If possible drink so many fluids to save yourself from dehydration
  12. Make sure that your heater is checked and serviced by the manufacturers at least twice a year.
  13. Wear good wool clothes so that you can reduce the dependency on the room heater.
  14. Always keep a fire extinguisher in your home to handle fire.
