Tips to Make Hair Color Last Longer

Tips to Make Hair Color Last Longer

We regularly spend a good chunk of money to get perfect hair color since Hair Color adds a lot to our personality. Whether we have a simple, sun-kissed look or a dramatic change in hair shades, the question is how to keep it looking shiny and vibrant. Fading hair color is the problem with everyone and we don’t want to jump back into the salon chair after even four weeks. But with proper care, we can keep our color-treated hair shiny and last longer. Read on here.

After Coloring, Wait 2 Days before You Shampoo

Celebrity colorist Ryan Pearl, who works at Cutler Salon in New York City, recommends waiting at least 24 hours before shampooing. If you can go two or three days before shampooing, even better. This will give the color plenty of time to set. If you’re desperate to get that clean-hair feeling, Pearl suggests simply rinsing your hair with cool water and scrubbing the scalp with fingertips.

Skip the Super Hot Water

That hot shower might feel good after a long day, but is it worth ruining your hair color over? We didn’t think so. You are encouraged to use water at cooler temperatures when washing dyed hair as it will help prolong the brilliance of the color.

Protect Your Hair from the Sun and Chlorine

Protect your hair in the sun and chlorine. Use a hair protector with SPF when in the sun, pool, and ocean to keep your color from fading. Use products containing Chlorine and UV protectors. Many styling products, leave-in conditioners and hairsprays have SPF in them. A product with sunflower oil is great as it also has antioxidants to protect the hair.

Shampoo Your Color-Treated Hair Less Frequently

To prevent water from washing away your vibrant color, the answer is simple: Wash your hair less often. To retain those natural oils that help condition your color-treated hair, shampoo just two or three times per week, and never more than every other day. This will help your color last longer and help maintain health in your colored hair.

Try a Shower Filter

This will remove chemicals, chlorine, and minerals from your shower water, says Caselle. Hard water strips your hair's color and natural oils; these filters minimize color rinsing down the drain.

Keep your Hair Moisturized

Like moisturized skin, hair that's hydrated simply looks and feels better. Heat styling and over-washing strip the hair of nutrients, leaving it lackluster. Try a shampoo and conditioner which locks in moisture as it cleanses for a silky texture and luminous finish.

Maintain a Healthy Diet to Keep Your Hair Looking Great

What you eat has everything to do with the health of your hair, and how it looks. The nutrients from a healthy diet provide the energy that fuels hair growth and luster. Foods that include iron-rich protein feed your scalp and hair by building strong keratin, the protein that strengthens hair, improves texture and stimulates growth. Consume lean meat, fish, low-fat cheeses, egg whites, spinach and soy to keep your color-treated hair looking its best. Between meals, snack on fruits, nuts, vegetables and grains.
